Nature Matters: Make Your Vote Count for Wildlife

Nature Matters: Make Your Vote Count for Wildlife

Nature is under pressure. From habitat loss to the impacts of climate change, our local wildlife is facing unprecedented challenges. And right now, nature is being unfairly sidelined in political discussions. We need to change that narrative and ensure that nature’s recovery is at the forefront of every candidate's agenda. With the local elections approaching, you have a powerful opportunity to make your voice heard and demand action for wildlife.

In this blog we will give you examples of questions you can raise with your local councillor to ensure they stand with us in the fight to secure nature's recovery and connect people with nature. You can find your local councillor candidates through this tool here https://www.gov.uk/find-your-local-councillors.

1. Ask Your Councillors About Wiltshire's Local Nature Recovery Strategies

Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRSs) are vital plans that outline how to restore and enhance nature across the country. They provide a framework for councils and communities to work together to create a thriving environment. Here are some questions you can ask your local councillor to ensure they are prioritising and supporting Wiltshire's LNRS.

Ask your local council candidates:

  • "How will you ensure that the Local Nature Recovery Strategy is prioritised and implemented effectively in our area?"
  • "What specific actions will you take to integrate LNRS goals into local planning and development decisions?"
  • "How will you help landowners to open up access to land, to help nature recover?"

By asking these questions, you're putting LNRSs on the political agenda and holding candidates accountable for their commitment to nature’s recovery.

2. Champion Wiltshire's Wildlife Sites and Nature Reserves

Wiltshire's wildlife sites and nature reserves are one of the last places protected for nature. Sites like our rich chalk grasslands, chalk streams, wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands are essential habitats for a wide range of species and offer invaluable opportunities for people to connect with nature. Ask your local council candidates:

  • "What support will you provide to protect and enhance Wiltshire's wildlife sites and nature reserves?"
  • "How will you ensure that planning decisions do not negatively impact these vital areas?"
  • "How will you support landowners to enhance wildlife sites on their land?"

By highlighting the importance of these sites, you're urging councillors to prioritise their protection and management.

3. Advocate for Nature's Wellbeing Benefits

The link between nature and wellbeing is undeniable. Green prescribing, which involves recommending nature-based activities to improve mental and physical health, is gaining momentum. Ask your local council candidates:

  • "How will you promote and support green prescribing initiatives in our community?"
  • "What steps will you take to improve access to green spaces for all residents, recognising the well-being benefits?"

Encourage councillors to prioritise and recognise the importance that nature plays in supporting mental health and creating a healthy and thriving community.
